Why Do We Celebrate Frankie Manning?

May 27, 2020

It's World Lindy Hop Day! I'm happy to see so many lindy hoppers around the world celebrating the birthday of Frankie Manning.

For those who never met Frankie or don't know much of his history, you might assume that we honor him because of Hellzapoppin', doing the first airstep, etc. Yes, those are important accomplishments but it goes WAY beyond that. To say those are the only reasons we celebrate Frankie would distill his life unjustly.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent a little time with Frankie over the years (mostly at Herräng Dance Camp). I count myself amongst the many who had their life touched by the generosity of this man.

When I say generosity, it's because Frankie's combined spirit, skill set, knowledge, and temperament are why we have lindy hop enjoyed by so many today. He *chose* to share this dance with a worldwide community of people. He did it in a way that made lindy hop accessible to everyone. He easily could have chosen another path entirely but didn't. And Frankie did it with grace, humor, and a shocking level of patience.

I've spoken with dancers of other forms and they've expressed how lucky we lindy hoppers are to have had Frankie. I mean, think about it! The greatest and most influential lindy hopper of the swing era had retained the majority of his skills and was willing to travel around the world to share his knowledge.

Lindy hop's worldwide movement can be directly linked to Frankie Manning. His influence and impact are nothing short of seismic. And that's why we celebrate Frankie Manning!

So, Happy Birthday, Frankie! Thank you for sharing lindy hop with the world and inspiring us to swingout together.
