Enter the Music!

Good gawd I had a great time dancing at this week's Swing It Wednesday.

I felt myself "enter the music." The music makes you move and steps/figures just kind of disappear. You feel you & your partner expressing something together. I could have kept dancing for several more hours!

Yes, it was a nice reminder that joyful dancing isn't a math equation. It's also not something that is achieved simply through improved technique or expansive vocabulary (though those things can help).

In my years of dancing, getting to this magical place requires some combination of these things:

*Live Music - You need music that engages you to really listen and be responsive. This requires live music! In my mind, DJ music feels mostly like practice & choreography.

*Great Dance partners - This is more about partners who create/experiment with you. Again, technique/vocab helps but those aren't always the most essential elements.

*A Quality Dance Floor - There's no creating on a floor you don't trust and that limits your movement.

So thank you to everyone who danced with me! And shout out to the Weather Birds for the music. I'm feeling incredibly joyful just thinking about it!
